After competing in Rallycross since 2011, 21 year old Worthing based racing driver Aidan Hills has decided to take the plunge into circuit racing. Aidan and his father Daren who used to race Legends on the circuits himself, have decided to move into the Mazda MX5 Supercup. The move has come off the back of a disappointing campaign, in the 2016 Swift Rallycross championship and he now looks forward to a new challenge.
The MX5 Supercup has 24 races over the season, and features at the most famous circuits in the country, including Silverstone, Brands hatch, Donnington Park and many more. The car itself will be a lot different to the Suzuki swift Hills has been racing for the past 2 years, the big difference is the change from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive, which will require a different driving technique.
Aidan Hills: “We have been looking at circuit racing for some years now, and it has always been the plan to move into it at some point. Rallycross has taught me so much as a driver over the last few years, and I feel it has given me the perfect stepping stone into car racing from karting. I am sad to not be racing in Rallycross this year, and i may even do the odd race. But I can’t wait to get going with the MX5’s, the championship looks amazing, and I went to watch a race at silverstone last season, which made me really excited about getting involved.
It’s going to be a huge learning curve for me switching from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive, and obviously going from racing on a mixed surface to just being on asphalt. I will have to adapt my driving style quickly if I want to be up the sharp end. I haven’t really set any objectives for this season, I just want to go out there and have fun. I’ll learn the car and the new circuits, and then we will go from there.”
Hills and his dad are just starting to build the new race car for this season and hope to get it done before for the first round at Brands Hatch, Kent on the 8th/9th of April.
